Fake Rice: Efficient Assassin

Plastic is being involved with something it shouldn’t be. It’s turned rice into something deadly, honestly, you could just call it toxic rice, same thing anyways. It’s so difficult to detect if plastic rice has been snuck into our real rice as it looks so real.

Living in a rice country makes hearing the news about fake rice gravely terrible.

Yes, I know, dreadful. China had the mind to actually create plastic rice. We are already killing our animals Capture1.JPGand when you expose certain kinds of plastics to the sun they release heavy metals which lead to hormonal imbalances!? Remember? But, no, for some reason China decided “hey, what if we start squashing these plastics and forming them in to rice looking things”. ~~~ EXPLODING MOMENT ~~~ This operation fake rice has been going on for 4 years and is still on the market. It’s like a deadly invisible person, or something.

A woman reported that her rice started melting and transforming into goo instead of the typical warm, steamed, hot and delicious real rice she expected. There was another incident when a woman was videoing herself cooking vermicelli, a kind of long pasta made with rice, for her workmates but, unfortunately, something terrible happened. Her vermicelli started melting together and sticking like marsh mellows heated, she petrified and very angry with the discovery of mixed in plastics with her food. An important detail, they label the rice (made with plastic) Wuchang rice. But, they are slowly starting to spread it around with real rice.

If you just see how these fake rice are from, you’ll be disgusted. Various sizes of plastics are stuffed into this small squarish hole which crushes the plastic and poops out long strings of so  – called “rice” which they then cut in to groups and squish into another hole and the result is rice which is possibly impossible to identify it with real rice. But, we can’tarticle-1342795900393-141b55da000005dc-975011_568x452 let fake rice be representing the whole of China. China is a huge city counted in as one of the top high tech cities in the world. The person who thought of the idea of creating this isn’t looking for solutions but just trying to make money. With the type of technology that China holds it gives me a feeling they could solve big world problems, they just have to try harder. And, after all, China produces about a third of plastic waste polluting which ends up either being burned or thrown to sea. I guess with all the chaos now with “where do we put plastics?”, “how can we recycle them?”, “it takes more than 700 years to decompose plastic”, an idea emerged. But, honestly, it’s the worst idea. Lives (a lot of lives) are put on the line.

We have just got to understand and know that how much we squish and break down plastics its still won’t be possible to digest. Plastic stay plastic, no matter how much you stomp on it. If you’ve read my blog on the plastic problem then perhaps you would remember that plastic gets stuck inside animals stomach and stays there until the animal starves to death. They starve because they don’t feel hungry as the plastic stays in their stomach deceiving them and making the animal think they are no longer hungry until they die. How about us?! How do we get affected?!?!?

According to Natural News, we are affected by:

“Eating just three bowls of this fake “Wuchang rice” is thought to be the same as consuming an entire plastic bag, causing serious and even fatal digestive issues, especially if consumed daily as is often the case.

In fact, most people in China consume over half a pound of rice every single day, and recent health controversies have brought into light the question of whether or not it is safe to use plastic packaging in the food industry – let alone eat plastic rice!

Research has found potentially serious health risks associated with bisphenol A and a class of chemicals called phthalates, commonly found in plastics. Bisphenol A has the ability to disrupt the functions of our hormones, particularly estrogen. It has been linked to effects on reproductive development in several animal studies.”

Just so you know, Wuchang Rice is what they call their plastic rice. You might not have heard of estrogen but here are what they can do if you mess with them:

If you make your estrogen levels low, here is what happens:

  • Belly fat
  • Mood Swings
  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Hot flashes

High estrogen levels:

  • More weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Depressed
  • Anxious

Did you know that alibaba sells the machine to make this?  Below is the link:

This machine, ranging from $2000 to $37,900, is used to make artificial rice and sold at alibaba. But, this machine is shouldn’t be meant for making harmful or fake rice such as the ones made with plastic. This machine can be used to make artifical rice made with sweet potatoes and other human consumable product. But, there’s a huge possibility that they use this kind of machine to create plasticised rice.

Also, I found at Quora, eating plastic in general is a bad idea, melted or not. Small particles could get caught up in your intestinal track, disturbing your digestion and releasing toxic chemicals due to interaction with bile and stomach acid.

Extra info by Korean Times:

“This ‘plastic rice’ is made by forming potatoes and sweet potatoes into rice-like shape, then adding industrial synthetic resins,” said a food expert. “Since the rice is different from normal rice, it is hard like stone even when cooked. Moreover, the synthetic resin in it is very harmful to the human body.”

Now that you are aware of the dangers that lie with eating fake / plastic rice, let’s get on to the solutions and how can we avoid eating this type of rice:

  1. If you squish the rice and it turns into “fine” sort of powder then it’s real
  2. If you cook rice on a pan and it starts to smell of sweet corn and looks like it’s melting then it’s fake rice
  3. If you are washing your rice and they all float it’s plastic because real rice sinks

Be careful with what you eat everyone!

Fight Against Human Trafficking

“Human Trafficking is Modern Day Slavery” – The fresh quotes

Just recently, in Boracay, we had our local intel about some 50 year old American who proposed to a 14 year old girl. Unfortunately for the teenager she had no say as her mother approved it.

Yes, we had, an American 50 years old guest last year who proposed to a 14 year old with her mothers approval… I called the police… nothing happened for weeks… then I call ECPAT then DSWD                    finally took action…

Being in the 14 year old girls shoes would be horrifying. I can’t imagine being forced to marry someone almost 4 times older than me. I would be in great repugnance just sitting there as if I’ve been robbed from my say and my life. It seems as though the mother didn’t care and it just feels like she’s been betrayed and lef

There are innumerable people looking for a new life or a fresh start but get lured into a trap. A trap that most would say impossible to escape. Unfortunately, according to the U.S. State Department, an estimated 600,000- 800,000 men, women, and children are trafficked across international borders every year. That is a lot of people tricked into an inhumane and almost inescapable life.

childlabormap What is human trafficking, you may ask, well, it’s defined as an “action or practice of illegally transporting people from one country or area to another, typically for the purposes of forced labour or commercial sexual exploitation.”.

Definition of human trafficking explained by the United Nations:

“The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.”

Definition of human trafficking explained by L.O.A.S.H:

“Bad people smuggling other innocent people so that they could use them for forced labour, sexual exploitation and sometimes to steal tissues, organs, cells. Human trafficking, probably one of the worst types of crime. These unsuspecting people get lured in with promises of a new life and happiness but they instead encounter violence and unjust treatment.”

An example of human trafficking:

Have you seen the documentary called The Dark Side of Chocolate?  If you haven’t then I will explain. The documentary is made by a journalist whose pretty much risked his life to expose the dark side of chocolate. Kids are being smuggled from buses and are forced to do hard labour under the sun with barely anything but food scraps just to make chocolate. Children as young as 5 years old are under hard labour and slavery just to make chocolate for some of these companies:

  • Nestle

Screen Shot 2017-01-12 at 2.35.54 PM.png

  • Mars

  • ADM Coco
  • Godiva
  • Fowler’s Chocolate
  • Kraft

I know, nestle, it’s betrayed us. Aside from the fact, these companies know they are “exposed” and people out there, including you and I, are aware and dislike the fact that they are using child labour, they aren’t stopping. After watching this documentary, it was hard to enjoy these companies chocolate the same way. I mean I love chocolate and knowing that with every bite that I take supports Nestle, I can’t. At least there are still some humane chocolate companies that actually care and know that its terribly wrong to use child labour, for example:

  • Clif Bar
  • Green and Black’s
  • Koppers Chocolate
  • L.A. Burdick Chocolates
  • Denman Island Chocolate
  • Gardners Candie
  • Montezuma’s Chocolates
  • Newman’s Own Organics
  • Kailua Candy Company
  • Omanhene Cocoa Bean Company
  • Rapunzel Pure Organics
  • The Endangered Species Chocolate Company
  • Cloud Nine

Maybe you haven’t heard of half the names of these chocolate companies ever, like me, but, at least you have an idea of what chocolates you can eat while not being so guilty.

The documentary I was just explaining to you was filmed in Ivory Coast. If we want to stop this, images-2.jpgwe have to warn others, educate others to stop eating these brands chocolate or join the campaigns that are struggling to stop these big companies from child labour andslavery. I’m pretty sure with the loads of money coming in from the thousands of buys, especially Nestle and Godiva, they could afford machines to make their chocolate instead of smuggling and forcing young children to work. Let your voice be heard. And, spread the word…

This is just one example for human trafficking and its used for chocolate. Chocolate! Imagine.

Escaping these trafficking rings is like trying to get out of a strong current in the ocean. The longer you stay, the deeper you go. But, when you do escape joy might be the first feeling you get but then you know that fear soon catches up as you know that they threatened you saying that they will harm your family. Only of the escapees that fled from the trafficking rings have had the courage to speak up and tell their stories. Here are a few examples:

A man who escape A.K.A a survivor | I found his story on CBC :

This man was lured into what has been called the largest human trafficking ring in Canadian history  was forced him to work in deplorable conditions. He was falsely lured with 9 other men to Canada by the Domotor – Kolompar criminal organisation with the promise of work in the construction industry and thousands of dollars in pay. Instead of their “new” life promised to them in Canada, they were kept in basements, forced to work from dawn to dusk and fed table scraps. On Christmas, they were forced to watch the bad people who lured them outside in the cold while they had a feast. This was a very difficult and rough time for them. When this man escaped, he had some problems trusting anybody, although, he is working on it. Fortunately for him, the individuals who forced him to work from dawn to dusk, were deported as he was afraid they would go after him again.

So far we’ve only covered one of the types of human trafficking which is called forced labour. The two main types of human trafficking are:

  1. Forced Labour
  2. Sex Trafficking

Everyone is a target for sex trafficking, men, women, children. They describe being in a trafficking rings like a circus. Women which were brought into the trafficking rings were forced to go to different men nearly everyday. They were treated as if they were animals. They didn’t have a say in anything.

My suggestion on how to fight against human trafficking are the following:

  1. Spread awareness by:
    1. Prepare a speech in school to spread the word
    2. Form organisation to educate others about the human trafficking
    3. Post on FB, Twitter, Instagram and other social networking platforms about the new on human trafficking
    4. Tell your neighbours
    5. Tell your friends to tell their friends to tell theirs friends and so on…
  2. Speak up!!!
  3. Make an App to inform more people
  4. Post signs and put everywhere to let more people know

Human Trafficking, as we might all know is terrible. People get robbed from their lives locked away from humanity, pretty much. And, children (children!) are forced to work under such pressure and unhealthy conditions barely with breaks. If you just think about it or talk about with your friends or family and make then not only know but care and understand. You might just have read about human trafficking and the way they abuse other people but what counts is how you care and how you take initiative to really make sure everyone else cares. Cause if we, the people of this earth, really want to change something, we can. We just need the courage and the strength to stand up and speak up. Also, aside from educating others about just human trafficking, we need to educate others on their rights. Because most people who get sucked into that vortex of evil don’t know their rights and are treated like robots, literally robots. I don’t want to keep you much longer and starting writing a whole manuscript on what to do and what not to do, but, I just want you to understand the great importance and effect that spreading the word can do to others.

World War I: Why did it start?

Before all the fuss, the great powers of the world were Austria-Hungary, Britain, France, Germany, Ottoman Empire and Russia. So these empires were always like competing with each other for colonies. France and Britain, the two countries who’ve been competing since the 19th century got little bits of colonies each in Asia and Africa. They say that Germany had the most in military power which is Arms and naval race which most of the other great powers tried to stay in the same military pace. Even before the war started these world power were already preparing. Before 1914, the great powers started making alliances:

I. Central Powers (A.K.A Triple Alliance)

  •  Austria-Hungary, Germany, Italy
  • Centre of Europe
  • In 1882

II. Allied Powers (A.K.A Triple Entente)

  • Britain, France, Russia
  • 1907

These allies had their backs for each other kind of like this cartoon (well, exactly like this cartoon):

It all started by a murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand:

(I got this step by step reasons which led to war from the book Crisis and conflict)

  1. 28 June 1914 Archduke France Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was shot in Sarajevo, Bosnia
  2. 23 July 1914 Austria-Hungary’s confidence about going to war was boosted by German offers to back it against Serbia, so it demanded that Serbia hand over the leaders of the ‘Black hand’ by 25 July
  3. 26 July 1914 Russia promised to support Serbia if Austria-Hungary attacked it
  4. 28 July 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia as the leaders of the ‘Black Hand’ had not been handed over
  5. 31 July 1914 Russia mobilised its army in support of Serbia, leading to German fears of an imminent Russian invasion
  6. 1 August 1914 Germany declared war on Russia; France mobilised its troops to support Russia
  7. 3 August 1914 To avoid a war with Russia and its ally, France, Germany declared war against France and set in motion the Schlieffen Plan by entering neutral Belgium
  8. 3 August 1914 Britain sent an ultimatum to Germany, demanding it withdraw from Belgium, as Belgium was under British protection
  9. 4 August 1914 Britain declared war on Germany as Germany trophzd not withdrawn
  10. *BAM* World War I Begun

Switching of Sides

Through there was switching of sides and gaining a bit more allies. Somewhere through the war, Italy left Germany disagreeing with the Triple Alliance treaty that they signed, arguing that it was a defensive alliance. Italy then left to the Alliances side hoping to get land.

USA also joined in the war after Germany attacked a ship with their submarine which had American soldiers.

After USA joined the war on the triple Alliances side, Russia left asking Germany for a peace treaty called Treaty of Brest Litovsk.

images-4.jpegGermany ordered their troops that was attacking Russia to leave.

Germanys Defeat

After USA sent a large fresh group of troops this boosted the Allied forces and finally made the Germans retreat. Kaiser, the king of German, was forced to leave his throne and he ran off to Holland making Germany a republic.

After war…

An estimate of 8 million soldiers died and a lot of young men were wounded, disabled, traumatised and shocked. The countries that fought in the war had large damages everywhere which forced a lot of people out of their homes and to become refugees.Unknown.jpeg

Due to the bad living conditions a sickness called influenza pandemic spread around the world and killed more than 20 to 40 million people.

World resources were depleted from the powerful countries – Germany, France, Britain and Russia. France had a heavy debt to the USA which they knew would take years to repay.

Since more men died from the war, more women were given more responsibility, their roles changed and they were expected to do more things. Finally, women were given the chance to work and vote.

Other Peoples Views on how the war started

There are a lot of OPVs (other peoples views) from different coutries and different historians which told about their idea of how WWI (World War I) reall started. Till today, historians still argue and ebate the trigger of WWI. Some historian views on the war:

  • An Austrian historian                                                                                                                                             It was the death of the Archduke Ferdinand which triggered the war. If the ‘Black Hand’ didn’t ask the young 19-year-old boy to assassinated Archduke and his wife this war wouldn’t have happened.                                                                                                              ///
  • A German historian                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Germany didn’t start the war, all it was doing was defending itself. It’s because of the competition for colonies, armies and navies the war begun. Germany had to defend its ally of course so it wasn’t fighting on anger and aggression but more on self-defence.                                                                                                                                                           ///
  • A French historian                                                                                                                                              One word. Germany. This whole thing, this war that lasted four years and killed nearly 8 million is Germany to blame. We all know they’ve been preparing for war before 1914 and they just used the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand as an excuse to finally bring up the war. It’s Germanys fault.                                                                                                                                      ///

So these are just a few of the historians who showed their perspective. I was thinking maybe it was really just the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand which started this all. But, you can really see the hatred and anger the French had for the Germans back then. Even till now some people hate the Germans they won’t buy any product 0r become friends with a German. Comment down below your OPV on why the war triggered!

Solar Power: Saving People Through Birth

Dr. Laura Satchel and her husband has designed a solar power in a suitcase which includes batteries, solar panels, extensions,  essential medical devices, surgical lighting and more to help women specifically through birth. Dr. Satchel looked for the reason why so many woman have been dying in Uganda by child birth. When she visited the hospital and saw the unreliable source of light she knew she just had to do something. One time while she was aiding a women to give birth the lights turned off in the middle of the night and all they had was her flashlight. Dr. Satchel decided, when she got home, with her husband who worked with solar panels to make a device in a suitcase to help with the lighting. When she returned back to Uganda, everyone was happy and thanked her. Slowly more people started asking if they could also receive one of these suitcases. Soon, she started delivering her product worldwide. People knows her as a superhero and a lifesaver.

I really feel as though she really helped a lot of women. She made it easier for people to do c-section in the dark because of her product, We Care Solar.

The Layers of the Sea

There are five layers of the sea which were all named by scientist. Firstly, is the top layer called Sunlight Layer (or Epipelagic zone). This layer ranges from 0m to 200m and is filled with mostly tuna fish, sea turtles, mackerel, jellyfish and even sharks! It’s a bit more difficult for sea creatures in the sunlight zone to hide but most of these sea creatures have a special something calle countershading which helps them to blend the light and dark. While I was swimming with my sisters in the beach I’ve noticed some fish that were see-through. I was flabbergasted.

Secondly, is the Twilight zone (or Mesopelagic zone). This zone is slightly darker than the Sunlight zone and it looks way spookier. Is this area, you can find bristlemouth, swordfish, squid, wolf eels, cuttlefish and more.

Thirdly, the Midnight zone, it starts to become really dark and cold in this level. The creatures that were found here are algae, anemones, anglerfish, arrow worm, cookie-cutter shark, copepods, crabs and other crustaceans, ctenophores, dinoflagellates, fangtooth, lanternfish (Myctophids), mussels, nudibranchs, vampire squid, segmented worms, siphonophores, swallower fish and a lot more. It can’t imagine what it would be like to swim around there looking for new creatures.

Fourth, the Abyss zone, it goes deep to 13,124 feet and the second to the last zone. Fish here are anglerfish, deep sea jellyfish, deep sea shrimp, cookiecutter shark, tripod fish, and dumbo octopus. Finally, I couldn’t wait to finally tell you what they found in the Trench. One of the weirdest water creature that I thought that they found is the Blob fish. It pretty much looks like an old face, which most people call ugly. It really can’t move, it just stays there till the food come to them and they can really just get eaten up by one scoop. Scientists, though, are fearing that these blob fishes will soon get wiped out due to its deep ocean trawling. Also, before I finish just want to tell you that the deepest creature that they’ve seen, you know since they haven’t went super deep yet, is a snailfish.

Our Earth

So they say, the earth was formed by a collision which happened of 4.5 million years ago! And, it’s still cooling down and classified as one of the terrestrial planets as it is made out of rocks, just like Mercury, Venus, Mars. Unlike the gas giants, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus Neptune, A.K.A the gas giants. How about the moon? Well, they also say that the moon was one of those collisions and the moon was a piece that was flying of our earth. The speed and the strength of the moon zooming out wasn’t as strong as our earths gravitational pull and the moon stopped in its place. Some of the scientists thoughts on why the moon has those craters, cause of the crash…

Earth Formation

Hey, it’s highly important to know what the very thing that we live on is made up of. Come on. Pimageseople who have tried to study and experiment on the second layer of the earth, which is the mantle have failed. The biggest whole that was drilled, called Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia, just came down to 12 km. The crust, first layer where we live on, itself is already 40 km so they didn’t really have the chance to see the mantle. So I wondered how did they find the inner core, outer core, mantle and crust? One word. Technology. Scientist detect the seismic waves that bounce of through the earth. The waves bounce of the layers with the information of the density. Here are the layers:

I. Crust

  • First and outer most layer of the planet.
  • The Continental Crust is about 40 km thick.
  • The Oceanic Crust layer is about 8 km, that is very thin (scary!!!).imgres-1
  • Mainly made up of two volcanic rocks, Granite and Basalt.

II. Mantle

  • Middle Layer
  • Has the thickness of about 2,900 km
  • Made up of Magma (melted rocks)
  • Around 2000C

III. Core

  • Scientist have had a hard time trying to find out about this layer.
  • It’s the center of our planet, about 6,400 km far from the crust.
  • Scientist are guessing that the temperature down there is an estimate of 7,000c

Men, look ahead! We’ve found land!!!

Don’t the explorers of the earth have such a thrill as they explore new land? There was this German geographer called Alfred Wegener who said that all the continents were one, and he named this Pangaea which is a Greek word for “one earth.” Of course, no one really believed him at his time but a lot scientist see the matching jigsaw of the continents that he saw before and matched it up with all the evidence they found. For example, there was this, now extinct, water creature’s fossils that they found both in South America and Africa, this same animal could not fly and swim far distances. They asked themselves how?  And, later on, scientists approved Wegener’s continental drift theory. Amazing.

How about the mountains? They form by the plates that push against each other to form a hill. The scientist who study this sort of thing call the plates —> tectonic plates. There are three ways a mountain can be built up –> Volcanic, fold and block mountains:

I. Volcanic Mountains

Tectonic plates are pushed together forcing the magma to enter the earth surface. <– This often makes up a volcanic mountain or a stratovolcano. There are a few mountains that you’ve probably heard of that are made in these steps such as: Mauna Loa (In Hawaii) and Mount Fuji (in Japan). There are some people who fear that an earthquake may wake up the Mount Fuji which will cause a second big disaster.

Worlds tallest Mountains

Mount Everest

imgres.jpg From the wikipedia “Mount Everest, also known in Nepal as Sagarmāthā and in China as Chomolungma/珠穆朗玛峰, is Earth‘s highest mountain. Its peak is 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level.[1] Mount Everest is located in the Mahalangurmountain range in Nepal.[8][9] The international border between China (Tibet Autonomous Region) and Nepal runs across Everest’s precise summit point. Its massifincludes neighbouring peaks Lhotse, 8,516 m (27,940 ft); Nuptse, 7,855 m (25,771 ft) and Changtse, 7,580 m (24,870 ft).”

imgres-2From the Wikipedia “Mount Kilimanjaro (pronunciation: /ˌkɪlɪmənˈɑːr/),[6] with its three volcanic cones, “Kibo”, “Mawenzi”, and “Shira”, is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It is the highest mountainin Africa, and rises approximately 4,900 m (16,000 ft) from its base to 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level. The first recorded ascent to the summit of the mountain was by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889. The mountain is part of the Kilimanjaro National Park and is a major climbing destination. The mountain has been the subject of many scientific studies because of its shrinking glaciers.”

Kangchenjunga (Nepali: कञ्चनजङ्घा; Hindi: कंचनजंघा; Sikkimese: ཁང་ཅེན་ཛོཾག་), sometimes spelled Kanchenjunga, is the third highest mountain in the world, and lies partly in Nepal and partly in Sikkim, India.[3] It rises with an elevation of 8,586 m (28,169 ft) in a section of the Himalayas called Kangchenjunga Himal that is limited in the west by the Tamur River, in the north by the Lhonak Chu and Jongsang La, and in the east by the Teesta River.[1] It lies about 128 km (80 mi) east of Mount Everest.[4]

Kangchenjunga is the second highest mountain of the Himalayas after Mount Everest. Three of the five peaks – Main, Central and South – are on the border between North Sikkim and Nepal.[5] Two peaks are in the Taplejung District, Nepal.[6]

imgres-3.jpg From the Wikipedia “Lhotse (Nepali: ल्होत्से; Tibetan: ལྷོ་རྩེ) is the fourth highest mountain in the world at 8,516 metres (27,940 ft), after Mount Everest, K2, and Kangchenjunga. Part of the Everest massif, Lhotse is connected to the latter peak via the South Col. Lhotse means “South Peak” in Tibetan. In addition to the main summit at 8,516 metres (27,940 ft) above sea level, the mountain comprises the smaller peaks Lhotse Middle (East) at 8,414 m (27,605 ft), and Lhotse Shar at 8,383 m (27,503 ft). The summit is on the border between China, Tibet and the Khumbu region of Nepal.”

Makalu (Nepal: मकालु; China: Makaru) is the fifth highest mountain in the world at 8,485 metres (27,838 ft). It is located in the Mahalangur Himalayas 19 km (12 mi) southeast of Mount Everest, on the border between Nepaland China. One of the eight-thousanders, Makalu is an isolated peak whose shape is a four-sided pyramid.

Makalu has two notable subsidiary peaks. Kangchungtse, or Makalu II (7,678 m) lies about 3 km (2 mi) north-northwest of the main summit. Rising about 5 km (3.1 mi) north-northeast of the main summit across a broad plateau, and connected to Kangchungtse by a narrow, 7,200 m saddle, is Chomo Lonzo (7,804 m).

Just like a pimple, volcanoes can explode. BAM! BAM! BOOOOM! some volcanoes can be a mountain which changes it’s mind and decides to explode. But of course the scientific version is that the magma below us kind of seeps out and you know the rest. What surprises me most is the island, Hawaii. It is made up of five volcanoes and two of those
53ed4a40d52b4eef063919ec8a928e6d volcanoes are still active; dormant, an active volcano. How scary it would be to go to anywhere with an active volcano since it’s hard to know exactly when a volcano will erupt. But, most volcanoes erupt at faults and there are more than 1,500 active volcanoes on this earth. Yikes. Also, how they classify a volcano is just when the last time it erupted. How can we know for sure?! Ever?! I guess technology.

Earthquake, everybody run!!!!

There are two ways the earth can expand and move. One, there is the more calmer one where barely anyone notices anything moving. An example, Mt. Everest, it grows every year and most climbers don’t notice the movement. The two plates that form Mt. Everest slowly push against each other but doesn’t cause havoc or much hassle. Did you know that there are more mountains and trenches under water than on land? But, earth quakes are the more violent and messy part. They can just  be a light push or strong enough to knock down the highest buildings and cause MASS DESTRUCTION. Honestly, when I experienced an earthquake I was petrified. I didn’t know what to do. I was on the bed and I heard a creaking sound and then everything started to shake, everything happened to fast. I shouted at my two sisters who were in front of the tv watching national geographic. I ran to them literally holding the tv which nearly fell on top of my two sisters. After I ran out of the house, everything calmed. It was just a light earthquake, but scary. Wow, remembered it like yesterday. Have you watched the movie San Andreas? They say that the San Andreas, or the Ring of Fire, was one of the strongest earthquakes. This has made a big, big, big, big fault. It hasn’t come for years and years and years now but some people are worried when the next Boom will come.

“Oxygen, you are perfect staying 20 – 21% in the air chart.”

I’ve heard about how people need more oxygen when up in a mountain because of the air up there so thin. Also, the people who do live in the mountains and are more adapted to the air have bigger lungs.

When I learned that the oxygen around us is about 1/4 of the air around us I worried. I thought that we were running out of the air, well, I was wrong. Apparently, if a human being intakes 100% of oxygen that same human will cause not only lung damage but blindness. “Oxygen, you are perfect staying 20 – 21% in the air chart”.

Science Hour

“The science today is the technology of tomorrow.” Edward Teller

Science. Is. Awesome! Right?

I started to read the book Exploring Creating with Physical Science, again, and it started the first chapter with the basic things, like:

Atom – Smallest chemical unit in the matter. Nobody has yet seen this but there is proof it exists. It was the British Physicist, J. J. Thompson, who first discovered the parts of an atom. That’s some interesting science.

Molecule – Is made up of 2 or more atoms linked together creating a unique property

Concentrate – Quantity of a substance with a certain volume. You’ve heard of second – hand smoking right? Do you believe that second – hand smoking affects you or not? Well, my thought is that it doesn’t. Apparently, when someone smokes he already takes in all the concentrated poison that the cigar emits when lighted. When the smoke exit his mouth or the cigar it mixes with the air around and kind of diffuses it, which makes it barely affect you if ever it even does affect you.

Aside from learning that, I found out the numerical meaning for the prefixes –>

  • Centi, 0.1
  • Milli, .001
  • Kilo, 1000

and, the and objects, volume, length and mass in the metric unit and English unit:

  • Volume

Meter Unit = Liter

English Unit = Gallon

  • Length

Meter Unit = Meter

English Unit = Foot

  • Mass

Meter Unit = Gram

English Unit = Slug (Weird. Also, barely used.)

Plastic Problem

Today I visited the Material Recovery Facility (A.K.A the MRF) in Boracay. The facility was filled with: glass bottles, plastic bags, containers, grinding machines, up – cycled “concrete” – looking blocks and piles of cans. Some of their walls were built up with patterned and recycled glass bottles (pretty cool ~__^). On our way to one of the other facilities in the MRF, they, the employees, were explaining screen-shot-2017-01-09-at-8-20-37-pmthat the floor we were currently stepping on was constructed of glass and other materials that they’ve jumbled up together. They showed us their grinding machine where they just toss some glass objects at the top and the glass they’ve tossed, at the top, gets pooped out all cut and broken into small bits. One of the employees even stepped on the newly shattered glass explaining that it is safe. The facility even converts plastic bags into these cement blocks!

Plastic time.

We’ve all seen plastic at least once in our life. Right? Plastic is cheap, affordable, lightweight and a lot more things. Who wouldn’t want to use plastic? We’ve seen plastic used as bags, containers, toys, chairs, cups, utensils and even gum (which is made of synthetic rubber, A.K.A plastic!). But, did you know that plastics take as much as 450 to 1000 years to biodegrade?! Yes, it is a bad thing. Can you imagine our earth slowly being crowded with plastics? Oh, wait, our earth won’t necessarily be crowded by plastics as our animals such as whales, sea turtles (which mistake plastics for jellyfish), birds and probably all other animals mistakenly take in plastic as food and lessen the plastic in our oceans.

This is how it works:

  1. Animals see the plastic, Animals eat the plastic
  2. Unfortunately, plastic cannot be digested and stays in the animal’s stomach
  3. When the plastic rests and decomp- wait, it will probably take few hundred years before the decomposition of the plastic, the animals gets fooled and doesn’t eat anything as it thinks it’s full
  4. The animal eventually starves itself without even knowing! That just sounds terrible. Starving but full?

Aside from animals being starved to death by these plastics which linger around in our oceans, streets, flying around through the air and wrapped around our hands for the next time we go grocery, they also affect animals by choking them. There are countless birds, turtles and whales which get washed up to the shore close to death. We have been able to save a few birds which get tangled up with plastics, chocking. There were a scan and autopsy of a whale they found, and their news was that the whole stomach was filled with a hill of plastic. We have to stop this. We have to spread the word.imgres

We do have an upper hand, though. Most plastics have a small label with a number surrounded by arrows which usually represents what type of plastic it is made of and how safe and dangerous it can be.

*runs down to check plastic bottles* Heh ^__~

I rummaged through our pantry and noticed that most of the products that we’ve bought have the number 1. Interesting.

*runs back up*

Below are the 7 types of plastics and its corresponding names and it’s description on it’s “pros and cons”:

Polyethene terephthalate (PET or PETE) bottles are the most common plastic container in use for soft drinks, juice, peanut butter, salad dressing, ketchup and water. The number on the recycling icon identifies all bottles in this category. Currently, the American Chemistry Council states that is okay to reuse these bottles, after washing them. EcoVillage Green notes many PET bottles are difficult to clean and may leach endocrine-disrupting chemicals when exposed to high temperatures. Most manufacturers intend for consumers to use each bottle once, so more research will determine if consumers can safely reuse one-time-use bottles.

|My input:

So, technically, this type of plastic is known worldwide that it cannot ever be biodegraded. These plastics will stay on this earth till the end of time according to scientist and researchers. But, there are hundreds of people out there finding solutions to fix this big problem. The thing is, most plastics labelled PET/PETE or the arrow surrounded 1 is supposedly “recyclable and reusable”. According to Livestrong (or the paragraph up there), most manufacturers intend for consumers to use each bottle one time. Unfortunately, I haven’t come across one that has a sign saying “use this plastic once” or “clean thoroughly as this plastic can release heavy metals leading to hormonal imbalance”. Apparently, there’s hope! There was a group of Japanese scientists who found a type of bacteria that eats the kind of material that plastic is made of. This will be world changing.|

According to the wimp, HDPE plastic is the stiffer plastic used in milk gallon jugs, detergent bottles, and some toys and plastic bags. HDPE releases very few chemicals, and experts recommend trying to get water bottles made of this plastic as it’s the safest one.

|My thoughts:

A bottle I found in our house, which was from NYC, was made of HDP/HDPE. While we manufacture who knows how much a day plastics, I think the best idea is to make them all out of this sturdy and “safe” (according to scientists) kind of plastic. I mean they’ve already admitted that PET/PETE isn’t such a safe kind of plastic, and since no one has found a way, yet, to make the PET/PETE plastic more human friendly, they should replace everything with HDP/HDPE so that even though we have a lot of plastics we can be assured that we are somewhat safe from it. It meaning plastic.|

PVC OR 3V OR V | 3

PVC is a flexible plastic used to make food wrapping, teething rings, toys for pets and children, and bottles of cooking oil. It releases two toxic chemicals which can potentially cause hormonal imbalances. Experts recommend finding an alternative if possible.

|What I think:

I don’t know how to tell you guys how many times I’ve done a research on PVC but what I can tell you is that I still get surprised on how PVC affects us, in a bad way.|

LDPE | 4

You will often find low-density polyethene (LDPE) plastic in packaging for bread wrappers and frozen food, plastic wraps for food storage, grocery bags and trash bags. This category of plastic is safe to reuse, within reason. Consider the original purpose of the packaging before you use it to preserve or store food. These plastics are thin films that are lighter weight than other categories of plastic so they can melt or emit toxic chemicals if exposed to high temperatures, including the microwave.

PP | 5

Manufacturers use polypropylene (PP) plastic for some toys, baby bottles, drinking straws, syrup, yoghurt, margarine and deli soup containers. The current research does not show any evidence that this category of plastic leaches harmful chemicals.

|Add on:

This sounds like a pretty good type of plastic. Apparently, this type of plastic is great at avoiding grease, moisture and chemicals! I had a problem before with my dog when I left her a bowl (made of plastic) of water, then after a day or so I started to notice moulds starting to surround her bowl. This is dangerous for dogs btw!|

PS | 6

Polystyrene is a cheap, lightweight plastic that can be used in a manner of ways. It’s usually found in disposable styrofoam drinking cups, egg cartons, takeout containers, and plastic utensils. When heated, it can release carcinogenic substances. It is meant to be disposable and is not suitable for repeated use.Polystyrene is a cheap, lightweight plastic that can be used in a manner of ways. This is likely the most dangerous category of plastics as it was designed as a sort of catch-all other uncategorised plastics. These plastics can leach a lot of chemicals into food and beverages and should be avoided whenever possible.

Some Countries, such as US, England, Mexico, India, Burma, Bangladesh, and Australia are starting to realise the terrible mistake of even introducing plastic. The reason to why people “prefer” plastic or like using it is because its cheap, its light and probably has countless uses. But, if we want to help out our planet, our animals and even ourselves then we should find a way to stop this world problem. An example, in France there are no plastic bags, it’s either you bring your own trolley or you buy a paper bag. You need to find a way to implement this where you live. And, as always, spread the word to the world.

Yours truly,

“Tipping points…”

*squints at computer*

Before we start going through the deep process of learning the serious problems of tipping points related to climate change and how they seriously affect our planet, I think it would be a good idea to first let you guys understand what are tipping points, related to climate change, actually mean.

images.jpgDefinition of a tipping point defined by the wiki:

A climate tipping point is a somewhat ill-defined concept of a point when global climate changes from one stable state to another stable state, in a similar manner to a wine glass tipping over. After the tipping point has been passed, a transition to a new state occurs.

If that was sort of a blur to you, then it’s best you know an example. Would you believe me that over 6,000 years ago that Sahara desert was filled with trees, rivers and filled with vegetation? This was the Sahara’s “green” era, where everything was filled with water holes, according to studies and evidence found at an ancient cave which used to be surrounded by glorious amounts of water. Yes, the desert we all know as the largest hot desert in the world, was once filled with green, green and green. It has surprised many, as it changed abruptly, from cool and humid weather to blazing, hot sun. This is one example of a tipping point.

Time for the real stuff.

Ilissa Ocko, a scientist who explains mostly about climate change, has written a blog, on Environmental Defence Fund, about 6 of many of our worlds climate tipping points that she suggests scientist should worry about most. Here are three out of the 6 climate tipping points we all should worry about:

  1. The Arctic sea ice melts
    • Ilissa’s explanation to worry about our ice melting:The melting of the Arctic summer ice is considered to be the single greatest threat, and some scientists think we’ve already passed the tipping point. As sea ice melts and the Arctic warms, dark ocean water is exposed that absorbs more sunlight, thus reinforcing the warming. The transition to an ice-free Arctic summer can occur rapidly – within decades – and this has geopolitical implications, in addition to a whole ecosystem being disrupted. In my opinion:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           I highly agree as to what Ilissa is saying but I’d just like to give my own input and add on for more reasons on why we should worry about our ice caps melting. First, I’d always like to think about the world like a domino game, well, they have a term, it’s called dominos effect, it’s when one act or event leads to more or multiple other events, like a chain. As I was saying, when I think about the ice melting in the dominos effect, it leads to multiple disasters:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     ICE MELTING (DOMINO EFFECT)
      • Polar Bears lose most of their home!
        1. Isn’t this terrible! We have enough endangered and extinct species in this world.
        2. According to  the U.S. Geological Survey projects, we will lose 2/3s of our polar bears by 2050
      • Water rises
        1. This, we should all understand, puts us in a grave position.
        2. Less salt water in the ocean
          1. Animals adapted to the salted water will be affected as more none salted water rises throughout the ocean
          2. Whole ecosystem being disrupted (from Ilissa)
        3. Water levels in beaches rise to much and ends up destroying nearby houses
          1. Government pays for helping locals who stay at beach front to go up to a more elevated level
        4.  Cities streets get more flooded
          1. Sewage problem
        5. Trash from ocean starts spreading everywhere
        6. Venice sinks more
      • Also, the snow that are peacefully laying on the ice caps help reflect a great amount of light back into space which helps balance out the climate change and when that melts that causes us an even greater problem in our climate change!
      • DOMINO EFFECT, GUYS! DOMINO EFFECT!
  2. Greenland becomes ice – free
    • Ilissa’s good explanation to worry about Greenland becoming ice – free:                                                                                                                                                                             The warming of the Arctic may also render Greenland largely ice-free. While Greenland’s ice loss will likely reach the point of no return within this century, the full transition will take at least a few hundred years. The impacts of the Greenland ice melt is expected to raise sea levels by up to 20 feet.Half of the 10 largest cities in the world, including New York City, and one-third of the world’s 30 largest cities are already threatened by this sea level rise. Today, they are home to nearly 1.8 billion people.

Other vulnerable American cities include Miami, Norfolk and Boston.

    • Hey, it’s me. If you haven’t heard about the story and how greenland is actually all icy and iceland is actually all green then you should know. Now you shouldn’t be as confused, at the start, like me ^__~. I’d like to explain the story of greenland and iceland but that is for another story for a later time. Just stand by. But, remember I mentioned a couple of sentences ago about the domino effect, which I am super addicted to, well, if you read closely on what Ilissa’s is saying, then you should notice that she mentioned the sea levels rising, almost, through the roof (I mentioned about the sea levels in the domino effect).
  3. The West Antarctic ice sheet disintegrates
    • Ilissa’s view:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               On the other side of Earth, the West Antarctic ice sheet is also disintegrating. Because the bottom of this glacier is grounded below sea level, it’s vulnerable to rapid break-up, thinning and retreat as warm ocean waters eat away at the ice.Scientists expect the West Antarctic ice sheet to “tip” this century, and there is evidence that it already began happening in 2014.However, the entire collapse of the glacier, which would raise sea level by 16 feet, could take a few hundred years.
    • I have a suggestion for you to watch the documentary about climate change that Leonardo Dicaprio (Yes, the actor) has put together with his “crew”. The video is eye – opening and will change your view on climate change. In the documentary, Leonardo visited Greenland and Artic and you would see in the video surges of strong water would melting out into the ocean. We all learned from his documentary that Greenland and the Artic are both on their way to melt completely, and, Greenland is presently entering a journey into an irreversible feedback loop of melting.

But, you know, after all the problems listed out here, it’s amazing how we can help out. Just, by doing the simplest things, like, spreading the word, we could help.
