L.O.A.S.H’s Arduino Projects: Controlling Servo Motors with a Joystick

With this project, you will be able to control two servo motors with a joystick with Arduino! 

For this project you will need to gather:

To make this (really cool) project, you will need to:

Step 1: Battery

Connect your external battery to your breadboard.

Step 2: Wiring 

Get a piece of wire and connect one end to GND on your Arduino Board and the other end to the negative channel on your breadboard.

Step 3: Servo Motors

Get your two servo motors and 6 wires. Connect the VCC and the GND of the two servos to the VCC and GND on the breadboards inputs. Then, connect your first Servo Signal Connect to the Arduino Digital PMW 3 on your Arduino Board.

 In case you aren’t very familiar with the Arduino Digital PMW 3, it looks like the photo below as well as the Digital PMW 5 and the blue wire from the first servo

Your second Servo Signal Connect should be connected to the Arduino Digital PMW 5.

Step 4: JoyStick

Connect the GND on your Joystick to the GND on the Arduino Board.

Then, connect the +5V on your joystick to the 5V on the Arduino Board.

Then, connect the VRx on your joystick to the A0 on the Arduino Board.

Then, connect the VRy on your joystick to the A1 on the Arduino Board.

The photo below shows where I connected what and where. Just look at the corresponding colors to which wire and the connection.

Step 6: Verify, Connect and Upload

Once you verify and save the code, you can connect your Arduino board to your computer and upload the code to your board. Tada! 

Step 7: Have fun and Experiment

Yay! We’ve finally finished yet another Arduino Project. You guys are so awesome! Now, after playing around with this, you can try to experiment maybe add more things (an example, “lights, perhaps?”).

Wait, if you are having any problems uploading or your project isn’t functioning properly, you should double check your wiring and maybe check which Port your Arduino (on your computer) connected to in the tools. If there is anything else don’t be shy to comment down below!

All About the Bitcoin

First of….

What is Bitcoin?

A simple explanation of bitcoin (or at least a peak of it), is that it is a currency just like dollars, pounds, pesos, euros but instead is cryptocurrency. In case you still don’t properly  It’s much faster and cheaper if you want to send payments across the globe when compared to banks. And, even if you don’t have a bank account, you can still send money to someone else through your phone or computer. Also, Bitcoin is a decentralized network meaning that it has no middle-men.

History of Bitcoin

If you look at the figure below, you will see the rise! On Sunday, April 28 of 2013, one bitcoin was the equivalent to $135.3 dollars. Now, the prices are as high as $3,000 dollars!

(Some month of) 2007:

Some guy with a pseudonym of Satoshi Nakamoto was working on the idea of Bitcoin. This same guy is now a legend and you will soon find out why. Satoshi is supposedly living in Japan but no one really knows much about him. The identity or identities(?) of Bitcoin is actually on of the Internet’s great mysteries.

August 15, 2008:

A whitepaper or patent application was then released by three men: Neal Kin, Vladimir Oksman, and Charles Bry. But, when asked about any connections with Nakamoto they all denied. The patent had details of what would be regarded as the first modern cryptocurrency with the idea combination concept of: decentralization, perfect anonymity, finite supply and blockchain technology (Stark).

August 18, 2008:

They made a website for Bitcoin which you could find by searching Bitcoin.org on your browser. Their domain for this website was registered under anonymousspeech.com which allowed them to register an anonymous domain name. Their site even accepts Bitcoins. And, according to their welcome page:

“Bitcoin uses peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority or banks; managing transactions and the issuing of bitcoins is carried out collectively by the network. Bitcoin is open-source; its design is public, nobody owns or controls Bitcoin and everyone can take part. Through many of its unique properties, Bitcoin allows exciting uses that could not be covered by any previous payment system.”

January 9, 2009:

The Version 0.1 of Bitcoin was finally released!!

January 12, 2009:

This was the day that the first Bitcoin transaction occured. 

October 5, 2009:

The exchange rate was establish by the New Liberty Standard. The value was US$1 = 1,309.03 BTC. Can you imagine if you bought one bitcoin back then you would have earned a lot from that much stocks built up.

December 16, 2009:

Bitcoin released its Version 0.2.

Remember the patent of encryption that Neal Kin, Vladimir Oksman, and Charles Bry filed on August 15, 2008 was published.

May 22, 2010:

The first real world transaction was believed to be spent on two pizzas by Laszlo Hanyecz, a Florida Programmer in Jacksonville, for 10,000 Bitcoins. At the time, 10,000 bitcoin was only US$25. 

July 7, 2010:

Bitcoin released Version 0.3.

Slashdot which seems to be “News for nerds, stuff that matters” mentioned Bitcoin v0.3 which helped in bring in a huge surge of new Bitcoin users!

September 15, 2010:

Just a fun fact:

The price of 10,000 BTC was now equal to US$600. Also, throughout the months of July onwards, BTC was progressing a lot.

Anyways, in 2010, Bitcoin was already getting it’s picture as a “proper currency” when merchants like Expedia, Microsoft and WordPress started accepting it as payment.


 

Did you know that in 2014, Bitcoin was said to be the worst cryptocurrency? It was because one Bitcoin was US$770  and then dropped down its worth down to US$330. Apparently, even the Russian rouble had a better performance than Bitcoin only dropping 45% against in the dollar but Bitcoin declined 60%!

Now, speeding up to 2017, Bitcoin is preferred as a preferred mode of currency.  Many netizens and other people believe that Bitcoin is a stable and trusted currency compared to most.

 

Which Country Uses Bitcoin  

There are many countries and territory where Bitcoin is legal. The three main countries that have the largest market of Bitcoin are: China, Japan and the United States. Did you know that Japan just recently overtook the States and became the second largest bitcoin market…… in the world. Japan has even made a way to allow citizens to pay for their utility bills with Bitcoin. They (Japan) even passed a law that makes Bitcoin a legal form of online payment (Scott).

#6 THE UNITED STATES

Payment cards are king in the United States, and bank ATMs can be found on virtually every block. Anyone who owns a Bitcoin debit card can easily survive on Bitcoin top-ups in the US without too many problems. Unfortunately, it is not that easy to obtain a Bitcoin debit card in the US. However, gift card purchases through Bitcoin are another option worth exploring.

#5 THE UNITED KINGDOM

As with the US, residents of the UK have a rather easy time to surviving on Bitcoin. Moreover, the Europeans have easier access to Bitcoin-to-wire transfer services as well. Plus, the number of gift card stores accepting direct bitcoin payments continues to grow. Some platforms, even offer gift cards for everyday stores, including Tesco’s and Marks & Spencer.

Which Country Bans Bitcoin

However, while there are countries that are accepting Bitcoin there are some countries that Bitcoin is illegal:

Bangladesh

The Central Bank of Bangladesh issued a statement in September 2014 saying that the use any type of “decentralised cryptocurrency” like Bitcoin is punishable by law and can even get you 12 years in jail! The statement says that:

“Bitcoin is not a legal tender of any country. Any transaction through Bitcoin or any other crypto-currency is a punishable offence”

Iceland

They say it’s slightly confusing because the statement issued in March 2014, by the Central Bank of Iceland states that 

“There is no authorisation to purchase foreign currency from financial institutions in Iceland or to transfer foreign currency across borders on the basis of transactions with virtual currency. For this reason alone, transactions with virtual currency are subject to restrictions in Iceland.”

So, the mining in Iceland is legal.

If you will notice, there is this (cute) dog(gie) up there on the screenshot with some text. What you have to do is search for a photo that you want, right click to copy photo address and paste it on the Image Url. Add some text. Experiment! Try changing the colors in the style.css to change colours and placing!

L.O.A.S.H’s Guide to (nearly) Everything: How to Assemble a CPU Computer

Haiii, again!! Welcome to another L.O.A.S.H Guide. Together we can do this! Also, advance sorry for the poor pictures and handwriting (I was in a hurry ;D). In this particular episode, I’m going to introduce a step -by- step guide on how to assemble your own Vertical CPU Computer.

Let us begin.

For this procedure, you will be needing the following materials:

  • CPU Tower (which is technically just the case)
  • Power Supply

When you’ve gathered your materials we can head on to the action. The procedure is the following:

STEP 1:

The first thing that I did was to screw on the exhaust fan. This will help when it starts to get hot inside the CPU. You will screw the fan to the opposite side of the power button of the CPU. The area in which you will be placing this fan is inside and on this mesh looking surface.

STEP 2:

Time to place the Motherboard. Be careful in this step as the motherboard is kind of sensitive. The side of the motherboard should sort of stick out on the side where the exhaust fan is. This side contains like the usb port and others. Then when you feel the position is correct, screw the four sides.

STEP 3:

Get your Power Supply and place it beside the mother board. You will see a big vacant rectangle space which you could refer to the picture. You could also move the wires from the power supply to the side (just for now) to keep it from blocking your view, we will deal with it later.

STEP 4:

Attach the CPU to the motherboard. Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures to show as the the mother board I had already had a fixed CPU on it. But you can check the guide on INTEL on how to install the CPU Intell, the first seven steps show you how.

STEP 5:

In this step, you will be installing the CPU Fan. This will be going on top of the CPU that you have just installed. If you look closely at the area of where you will be placing the fan, there are two handles where you could hook the fan. Make sure that this fan is stable by trying to move it around a bit.

STEP 6: 

For this step, you will be putting in your video card. If you look on the side of the video card, you will notice there is this place where to connect the display devices. You will have to slide this in with the mother board connection facing down. With reference from the pictures below, you will see that you need to slide it down to the one of the available port slots next to the connecting line on the mother board. I circled the location of where you will be connecting the video card to the motherboard in red at the photo slide below.

STEP 7:

You will have to pay close attention here because if you don’t do the wiring properly, the motherboard can fry. 

You will also be needing to look at the photos below for reference which will make it easier for you to understand. So there are 6 wires which are paired in twos. The three have the following labels on it:  H.D.D Led, Power SW and Reset SW. 

Now look at your mother board, specifically beside the video cord you placed you will see these small metal lines beside the word SPKR on the mother board. The wire colour order you will be following is: R(ed) W(hite) O(range) W(hite) W(hite) B(lue). Reference again is down below at the picture slide. The white and blue wires will be going in front of the R W O W, it (W & B) will be a row in front.

STEP 8:

More wiring here, guys. 

This time, the wiring will be for the power supply. Hold up the wires for the power supply and first get the Main Power Connector. This is the longest connector you’ll see among the other wires. Also, there is a small connector which you will need to combine to the bigger connector. Now, from the guide from my pictures you will notice where you will be needing to place this connector.

STEP 9:

We are so closeeeeeee!! 

Okay, so here we will be installing the hard drives. I have two because the other one is a backup hard drive. Just for your information, the back up hard drive is 500GB while the other main hard drive is only 250GB. I would recommend to have a back up hard drive but if you don’t have any right now, it is okay.

Anyways, to install the hard drive, first things first is to screw it in it’s rightful place. If you are looking at everything

from above, you will notice that there is this compartment for hard drives. Try putting the main hard drive on the very left side (closer to the mother board) while keeping the back up hard drive on the very right side. Make sure that you screw on the main hard drive properly and that it is not sticking beside the back up hard drive because it could cause malfunctioning.

STEP 10:

This time, we will be placing in the memory or ram. Just a precaution before doing this step, the RAM is very sensitive so take extra caution when handling it.

All you have to do is place it properly into the connection area (which is the same place called RAM in the picture). Make sure that it properly fits in before you push it in slightly hard. You will know that it is in when you hear a click and it is locked in. The sides will automatically lock in the RAM once pushed with a good amount of force. When you are finished putting in both of the RAM, you have completed step 10.

STEP 11:

I’d say this is probably one of the easiest steps.

Get you SATA wire and connect one end to the main hard drive and the other end to the SATA1 on the mother board. This will be like playing eye spy on the mother board. And, that’s all!

STEP 12:

Hey, remember one of our first steps was screwing in the exhaust fan? Well, you will need to plug it in somewhere to make it function so now is the time to do that. Get the wire connected to the fan and connect it to the CHA1_FAN labelled on the motherboard.

In this step, you will also need to plug in the speaker. This is a simple task. Just attach it to the mother board. This is a row in front of the colour coded wiring we did at step 7.

STEP 13: 

Screw in the port slot to seal and mobilise the video card.

Dying Paradises of the Philippines

The Philippine waters are usually full of beautiful fish and colorful, live corals. Taking a look back it can change your views on a lot of things. You could have discovered a variety of different colors, shapes, and sizes. There were such a great amount of schools (of fish) you could see as you swam around and had your sunset walks. Everything might have looked great on the outside with shimmering light blue water which seemed so perfect you couldn’t believe your eyes. But, the real story is within. You can’t always see what’s happening on the outside so we have to really dive in and find out. And, while there are many other beautiful utopias (^_~), we will be concentrating on the Philippines waters.

Philippines waters: Some are protected… Some aren’t

Because of the Philippines bountiful amount of marine life, 100 scientists have claimed it (the Philippines) to be the world’s “center of marine biodiversity”. That is a pretty great achievement. So that means 100 different people (that are scientist!!) have all agreed on the fact that the Philippines is full on boasting with underwater sea creature…… cool! And, if you go scuba diving, in some areas, you would feel like you were just transported into a new world. We need to learn to take care of this.

Intro to the Coral Triangle: Underwater heaven

Did you know that the Philippines is part of the Coral Triangle? This (the coral triangle) is a marine area stretching far across six countries which are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Timor – Leste and Solomon Islands. Others say that it’s nearly the size half of America.coral_triangle_map_final_081211_0Anyways, the Coral triangle is mostly famous for its astonishing amount of corals ranging from 500 to 600 different species of reef – building corals.But, that is not all! This (slightly broken) triangle supports, nurtures, and maintains more than 2000 species of reef fish!! It was on 2007 that the WWF started its Coral Triangle Program. The WWF has taken up the challenge to protect the Coral Triangle and develop sustainable solutions to help the inhabitants of the region. With the help of the USAID, the Conservation Internation, The Nature Conservancy, and the WWF are all working together on policy, fisheries management, marine protected areas and climate change adaption.

Donsol bay: Sneak peak of the biggest fish in the world

Also, the biggest fish swims within the 2000 species of reef fish.This fish is called the whale shark! If you haven’t heard of one or seen one you could watch (the awesome film) Finding Dory. 17-hang-out-with-the-gentle-giants-of-donsol-bay-whale-shark-divingAnd, yes, this type of fish is called a whale shark. If you want to see and swim with these big fishes, you could go on an adventure to Donsol bay which is also connected with the Coral Triangle. This is one of the many Paradises of the Philippines where you could go to enjoy the bar, hotel, restaurant and more! And, don’t worry….. Whale Sharks, the biggest fish in the world, eats the tiniest living organism in the ocean…. you are safe (most likely) just follow the rules and regulations of not touching them, riding them and chasing them (there is still more). Also, these creatures are very gentle and curious (so they will most likely try to approach you) but you should avoid making any physical contact with the oils on your skin may harm the Whale Shark. And, the good thing about this bay is that it is a marine protected area and that is why you could only snorkel with the Sharks (fish, remember they are fish). Although there is another place called Oslob (in Cebu) where you could find these fish but I advise not to go because it is a huge tourist attraction which has destroyed most of the forms of environmental awareness.

Also, if you are planning to visit, the beach is alluring.

Tubbataha Reef

The Tubbataha Reef is one of the 240 protected areas in the Philippines. It is located at the center of the Sulu Sea. This reef was once a very peaceful, filled with color and life area but it is currently suffering from overfishing, exploitation, and destruction. When other fishing grounds started declining of its fishes, sailors went to Tubbuataha in hopes of more fish in their motorized boats. Some of the problems that evolved over time (very quickly), was that the sailors started using (very, very bad) techniques for fishing like utilizing cyanide (extremely toxic salts that contain anion CN) and dynamite fishing (the practice of using explosives to kill schools of fish). Also, because the boats they (the sailors who started filling up the Tubbataha Reef) used were motorized which polluted the reef with a lot of oil.

This was too much. Explosions?!? This is illegal.

The decision was made with the help of some scuba divers and environmentalists who campaigned to turn the Tubbataha Reef into a national marine park. On August 11, 1988, with the aid of the President, Corazon Aquino, the Proclamation no. 306 was signed, which helped the establishment of 2 (not 1 but 2) Tubbatha reefs into a national marine park of 82,000 acres. Because of this (big) step, Philippines had just done a first time for declaring a marine area into a national park. This national marine park was then being properly taken care of by rangers sent by the Presidential Task Force.

Throughout their (the rangers) early years of protecting the park, they had a few problems. One of their struggles were that in 1996, sliding and shifting sand caused the unstableness of the rangers wooden structure tents. They overcame their problems (yay!) and the marine park rangers are now settled in a styrofoam-reinforced concrete structure. Their location is found on the Southeast Islet on the Tubbataha’s North Atoll. And, they have got their cool equipment with them such as patrol boats, utility boats, radars, radio communications, geo-positioning system (GPS) units, and basic research equipment. 24 hours/7 days a week is the times that the natural park is being guarded by (armed) rangers.

There are plans made by the World Wildlife Fund (or WWF) to make a modernized ranger station that was announced during the 25th anniversary of the Tubbataha’s Reef’s national park declaration in 2013. And, as the WWF says, legendary heroes need great hideouts – Batman had his Batcave, Darth Vader had two Death Stars and Voltes V had Camp Big Falcon.WWF, the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park boasts of unparalleled biodiversity levels. Over 360 hard coral and 600 fish species inhabit the park, which continuously seeds the Sulu Sea with life!!! And, this reef is also a UNESCO World Heritage.This means that this park was listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a special cultural or physical significance.

I just wanted to say thank you to the rangers that are helping guard the Tubataha Reef against exploitation. Thank you for caring about our environment here in the Philippines. Because of the rangers that make it their job to watch on a daily basis, the Tubataha Reef is properly being taken care of. Also, thank you to the strong campaign composed of scuba divers and environmentalist (people who really cared and spent time in the ocean) who made it possible for this reef to be protected and noticed, more!

Trivia: Did you know that on the back of the 1000 pesos bill you could spot the Tubbataha? Now you know!

 

Going there: “Are we there (the national water park) yet?” 

If you are planning to visit this heaven, you will have to take a plane ride to Puerto Princesa. Then from there, it will take about 10 hours to get to the park from Puerto Princesa. That’s a pretty long time but I am absolutely sure that it will be worth the time that was taken. Maybe you could bring some board games or books on your 10-hour trip. Also, the best times to go there would be around mid-March until mid-June…. the waters are calmer at those times. Coron: Almost got destroyed by Nickelodeon

“Excitement is something that could blind people from seeing the true about how it could destroy life.” ~ L.O.A.S.H

This was a direct quote from me ^_~. When I wrote “Excitements” I was referring to the one that Nickelodeon was planning to set up. Just recently, Nickelodeon made the plan and announced that they were going to make an underwater theme park in Coron. For me, this sounded so fun I mean I love theme parks but what it also sounded like was that this park was going to be the very thing that would destroy Coron.

In case you haven’t heard of Coron I will be giving you guys a “short” introduction about it. In Palawan, Coron is a first class municipality (a city or town that has corporate status and local government). It’s beach and waters are usually quite and calm. The view is spectacular and the water seems to be crystal clear. After 742 steps of hard – earned sweat, you could watch the sunset in a beautiful angle.

Anyways, proceeding about the theme park. There was a report on January 13-14 where Nickelodeon retracted from building the park because…

 

That was all just a glimpse of what is happening here in the Philippines. There so many people and netizens who are trying to bring a change and help. The Philippines has helped countless people in providing them food and livelihood. But, recently due to the overheating and climate change, more and more fish are dying and more and more people are having a difficult time. Before, if you were to be catching fish you would just take a few hours and barely exert any hard work and your boat would be overflowing with fish. But now, the workload would be longer, harder and less fish would be brought home. This affects all of us. For example, in the market, since it’s become more difficult to catch seafood, the prices will be raised.  We all have a chance to change this. We are all in this together. If you want to help and make a change you can. When you go swimming or have a casual afternoon stroll, you could help by picking up trash. You could teach your local neighborhood more about this. Future (magic) Charger: Charge for seconds, last for weeks

Have you ever experienced going somewhere with your phone but then ten minutes later you go low batt? Those times can be terrible especially if you need to inform someone of something or you wanted to take pictures and stuff like that. But, can you imagine if you had a charger which could charge in seconds and last for a week? Sounds like a miracle, actually.

Also, have you been in the situation where you phone charger just doesn’t seem to be working? Well, it’s because of a normal battery inside a phone, which is a lithium battery, only has the capacity to charge to around 1,500 times before it starts to slow down and charge to about 70% of their original capacity. So, professors, such as Nitin Choudhary, have been devising a plan to replace these lithium batteries with supercapacitors.

Have you ever opened the back of you iPhone or any phone whatsoever to check on your battery? Well, if you haven’t then I just want to explain to you that it’s not that large. The reason you need to know this is because the first problem of the researchers who are trying to invent this new technology fast charger was that the supercapacitors were too large. So, what they did was make their supercapacitors with tiny wire that were nanometre think. This helped them to cope up with the size. I don’t know, maybe you are trying to make something similar to this and you have a similar problem….. might help.

They are still tackling their way into making into a safe, fast and reliable kind of charger. As you might have known, because of the super fast way it charges it tends to overheat and in some cases explode, just like the galaxy note 7. I’ll update you guys if it’s already made and ready to be given out!!!

Artificial Intelligence

Are you with Artificial Intelligence? Or not? Unfortunately, if you choose to go against or with artificial intelligence,  it will still happen.

While robots have been around for a long time, artificial intelligence is something more complex. A diagnostic for blood cells are robots but artificial intelligence has its own “mind”. There are countless people who program and try to shape up the artificial intelligence. But, scientist and inventors, such as Elon Musk are highly worried about the dangers that artificial intelligence could bring up to our lives. I’m still thinking what side I should pick because AI has a lot of pros and cons.

Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence

Advantages:

  1. More Intelligent
  2. Quicker in thinking
  3. Can easily download wanted information
  4. They have better precision and accuracy
  5. Can do dangerous jobs such as space exploration while making them create their own decisions and leaving them to manage themselves
  6. Can do monotonous jobs as they don’t get bored like we humans do
  7. Faster actions = Faster decisions
  8. Help humans to make the world a better place
  9. If we get visited by aliens (hopefully in peace), we will look more advanced with these AI

 

Disadvantages:

  1. Steal the simplest of jobs
  2. High expenses in creating these robots
  3. Might take over the world
  4. Too precise? What if you told your AI car to bring you to your home in 5 minutes. But then you end up in your house at the precise time but with helicopters and police cars chasing you? You get the point right? Artificial Intelligence ‘likes’ having what they are told like their goals being done as they were programmed to do it, but it isn’t always that good.
  5. Artificial Intelligence is also used in bombs and other military and war stuff so in the wrong hands this could cause CHAOS!
  6. What if the AI’s start thinking for themselves and they think that humans are a threat to earth? And, in order to stop us, they might sneak nanobots into our brain and controls us! Or, our lives might just turn into the movie Terminator.

  • After years of studying at school, I could just be replaced by one of these AI’s?!

  • When other people get their hands on this…. we will be in trouble
  • What if people use these AI’s to hack into our system?

Doctors:

  • I can just imagine. Just our normal robots such as

Kids and Teens:

  • Cool! Robot friends
  • Will our lives turn into terminator? What if it’s just the bad robot?

Teachers:

  • They can pretty much know everything if they are programmed to….. they could replace us.

Schools:

  • Hmm, this would be hard to afford
  • These AI’s could help improve our systems and educate better!

Astronauts:

  • Now we don’t have to do such dangerous jobs
  • Good thing these things don’t puke

Military:

  • It’s easier to win in war
  • Maybe if two sides of a war has AI’s, whoever wins, no person will get injured
  • If these AI’s falls into the wrong hands, we will be getting ourselves into trouble.

L.O.A.S.H’s guide to (nearly) Everything: How to make an Intruder Alarm with Arduino

INCLUDES LOTSA PICTURES!

Before we begin, you will have to download the Arduino on your computer if you haven’t already. In order to program your Arduino to work, you will need the Arduino program installed. I downloaded mine at https://www.arduino.cc/en/main/software.

It’s time to learn how to make your own Intruder Alarm with your Arduino!!! If you don’t have an Arduino I just have to tell you that it will be a great investment.

All you will be needing are the following:

  • Arduino Board
  • Jumper Wires (13x)
  • Bread Board
  • 10k Ohm Resisters
  • LEDs (recommended different colors!!! :D)
  • Buzzer or Piezo
  • Ultrasonic Sensor (HC-SRO4)

On the top right, you will see this medium sized piece of machine that kind of look like speakers. Heh, they’re like baby speakers, how cute ^___^.

LEGOOOOOO STARTTTT!!!!

Step 1:

After gathering all your materials, take two of your jumper wires, which are preferably black and red. Connect one of the sides of the red jumper wire (remember, the jumper wire will do the same thing even if the jumper wire is a different color) to the 5v(olts) in your Arduino board and the other side of the jumper wire to Positive lane on the breadboard. Now, get your black wire and connect one end to the GND (ground) and the other end to one of the holes in the negative lane of the breadboard. This will be a very simple step as the GND and 5v are right next to each other. If you look at the top photo above, you will see which will be the proper places to put your positive and negative wires.wp-1488164286136.jpg

Step 2:

Let’s just do the simple steps, first, and I want you to start placing your LEDs in a row. In case you are a n00b (newbie or beginner) in all these wires and blah, LEDs stands for a light emitting diode. If you don’t want to know more about the cool components that LED holds and the important things you should know then skip to the next paragraph. Anyways, a LED or a light emitting diode is pretty much a miniature bulb encased by an epoxy case connected to two metal wires called the cathode and the anode. Once you get deeper and deeper into Arduino, it is of great importance to know the difference between cathode and anode. Let’s learn a little something. If you look at your LED, you might notice that one of the legs are longer than the other (weird?), well, the longer leg is the anode (+) and the shorter leg, you might have guessed, is the cathode (-). When you are placing your LED, the longer leg (or the anode) should be connected to to the jumper wire and the shorter leg (aka the cathode) should be connected to the resistor. If you don’t understand it completely, you will in due time.

You should get around 6 light bulbs and place them in a row. Look at the top photo for reference. You will not need to have that super long breadboard to complete this project by the way. As long as you connect all the wires to where they are supposed to be, like the wire to the anode and the resistor to the cathode then things should turn out fine.

Cause what you need to understand is how things are connected to the breadboard. Once you get the concept, then everything will be much simpler.

Step 3:

This step will be a bit tedious but will be worth the work later. So for your reference, you can check this photo and the other following pictures:Screen Shot 2017-02-26 at 19.47.49.pngPlease understand that as long as the jumper wire is on the same row that the legs of the bulbs are on, then they are connected. What you will need to do is connect your jumper wires and your resistors. Check the photo above for reference because I’m a n00b at explaining. What you will need to do is try to follow the photo above by the positioning.

(This will be from LED right to left. Meaning when you see the word LED 1,  this is the LED at the very right, just like in the photo.)

You will have to connect one of the ends of the jumper wire (any color) to the front of the anode or longer side of the legs of the LED and the other end to the Arduino. Down below I will be giving you guys which LED will you be connecting to which pin on the Arduino with the jumper wires. Just please refer to the photos if you don’t understand a word I’m saying because I really want you guys to make one of these!!! You will also have to be aware that the anode of the LED should be on the right side.

LED 1 —> pin 8 (these pins are on the Arduino Board)

LED 2 —> pin 9

LED 3 —> pin 10

LED 4 —> pin 11

LED 5 —> pin 12

Now, for the resistors, you will also notice that this has two legs. If your resistor has one leg then there’s something wrong. So, take one of the legs of your resistor and place it in the same row of the LEDs cathode then put the remaining leg into the negative lane of the breadboard. Do this step for each of the LEDs until you’ve completed it. Make sure the reddish part of the resistor is facing the LEDs…..

This step might be a bit messy….. just a warning.

Step 4:

Unfortunately, with the rush of excitement to show you guys something new and because of the excitement to achieve something new, I’ve forgotten to put in my Piezo or the buzzer.

If you want to add in your buzzer, you should make sure that you connect the longer leg (just like for the LED, the same way) of the buzzer to pin 3 on the Arduino with a jumper wire. And, connect the shorter leg of the buzzer to GND. To put connect the shorter leg of the buzzer to the GND, just make it on the same lane as the negative lane on the breadboard. After all, we did connect that to the GND at the start.

Step 5:

Place your Ultrasonic Sensor on the top right. For this step, you will have to grab 4 jumper wires. If you look closely at the Sensor, you will notice that it has 4 words: GND, ECHO, VCC, TRIG. For each word, connect a jumper wire.

Connections….

GND (on the sensor) —> GND (on the negative lane of the breadboard (A.K.A ground, too!)

Echo (on the sensor) —> pin 6 (on the Arduino board)

Trig (on the sensor) —> pin 7 (on the Arduino board)

Vcc (on the sensor) —> To the positive lane of the breadboard (A.K.A 5V(olts))

Your outcome should look somewhat like this:

Don’t mind the messy background. If you look closely at the contraption that I’ve made, you will notice how and where I have placed my jumper wires for the sensor.

Finally, just plug in your Arduino device and run your code to program it. If you get this annoying error message from Arduino saying: ” Avrdude: no programmer has been specified on the command line or the config file         Specify a programmer using the -c option and try again”. Then, all you have to do is, go to tools, then in tools go to boards and in boards click on boards manager.

So…

Tools < Boards < Boards Manager.

When you open you board manager, update your Arduino Avr Board.

Solar Power: Saving People Through Birth

Dr. Laura Satchel and her husband has designed a solar power in a suitcase which includes batteries, solar panels, extensions,  essential medical devices, surgical lighting and more to help women specifically through birth. Dr. Satchel looked for the reason why so many woman have been dying in Uganda by child birth. When she visited the hospital and saw the unreliable source of light she knew she just had to do something. One time while she was aiding a women to give birth the lights turned off in the middle of the night and all they had was her flashlight. Dr. Satchel decided, when she got home, with her husband who worked with solar panels to make a device in a suitcase to help with the lighting. When she returned back to Uganda, everyone was happy and thanked her. Slowly more people started asking if they could also receive one of these suitcases. Soon, she started delivering her product worldwide. People knows her as a superhero and a lifesaver.

I really feel as though she really helped a lot of women. She made it easier for people to do c-section in the dark because of her product, We Care Solar.
